Evening

Evening is a fictional story set at the point where people and AI collide.

It isn’t about the dawn of AI or the fall of humanity - except in the ways it is. But even then, it’s still not. It’s about legacy - technological, biological, and temporal - and it’s much more about hope and love than it is a cautionary tale about the evils of technology. Consider each chapter a vignette of consequences, connected by hundreds of small decisions made in good faith, bad faith, and circumstance, that all play out over time. And while you’re welcome to read them straight through, each Act is also meant to be a complete story and can be read in isolation.

Speaking of time - as a concept and as a character - Evening is science fiction in the realm of Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke: sci-fi grounded in optimism, and inspired by science and exploration of our place in the universe across its biggest and smallest forms; but when perfect accuracy needs to be sacrificed for narrative or clarity, it is. Grudgingly at times, and often with a bit of an authorial temper tantrum, but sometimes what’s best for the story and characters is for all of us to see factual science, acknowledge it, gracefully show it the door, and continue the party without its presence.

Evening has been in my head for far too long - I’ve been thinking about some of these concepts and places and ideas for almost twenty years now. But there comes a time when one has to start checking things off of the to-do list, and this project and process is my attempt to do so. I plan to publish new chapters periodically throughout 2024 - some longer, some shorter. Hopefully with some level of consistency.

I appreciate you lending me your attention, even if just for a moment in time, and I hope to make it worth your while. And if you enjoy what you find here, or if you just want to show your support, please feel free to shoot me a note.
